MakerBot METHOD is a device whose task was to fill the gap between desktop 3D printers for hobbyists and systems for professional additive manufacturing. Over time, the 3D printer has become a symbol of the SKETCH Classroom project, created with education in mind. Developing their device, manufacturer decided to implement a new, experimental MakerBot LABS extruder, which will allow the use of materials from external suppliers.

Equipping the device with a new extruder allows users to use a wide range of materials for 3D printing – also special ones. MakerBot puts a strong emphasis on engineering filaments, thanks to which it is possible to achieve the highest quality of 3D printing – Jabil, Polymaker, Kimya and Mitsubishi Chemical joined the group of leading Makebrot suppliers, along with BASF and LEHVOSS Group.

Johan-Till Broer, Vice President Product Development MakerBot, says that by opening the 3D printing material ecosystem, they give their users a tool to implement technically advanced projects. METHOD can be used by, among others engineers, creating precise and durable elements of competitive quality compared to other dextop 3D printers.

The cooperation with the leading producers of engineering filaments allowed the device to be optimized in terms of their materials, which for users became an opportunity to unlock completely new possibilities of the 3D printer. The Experimental MakerBot LABS extruder, compatible with METHOD and METHOD X devices, allows you to exceed the current limits. The modified hotend allows for obtaining an extrusion temperature of 300 ° C. In addition, it is equipped with a number of sensors that track temperature or material flow.

The new external materials of producers compatible with the MakerBot LABS extruder include:

  • Polymaker PolyMax PC – a polycarbonate material, possible to use with the support soluble MakerBot material
  • Jabil PETG ESD – resistant to electrostatic discharge
  • Jabil TPE SEBS 1300 95A – combining flexibility with high precision 3D printing
  • Kimya ABS CARBON – ABS doped with chopped carbon fiber for better stiffness
  • Mitsubishi Chemical DURABIO – combines acrylic transparency with high resistance to chemicals.

Currently, the new extruder is available for sale only in the United States and Canada.
