Materialise opens a new production facility for medical 3D printing

Materialise has announced the opening of a new manufacturing facility in the US, specializing in 3D printing of medical applications, to increase and streamline the production of individual medical implants. The company says surgeons are increasingly turning to 3D printing because they see the “added value” the technology brings to personalized patient care.

The facility, located in Plymouth, Michigan, will specialize in 3D printing of personalized medical titanium craniomaxillofacial implants. These implants are used in facial reconstructive surgery. Until now, Materialise has only produced titanium implants at its headquarters in Belgium. Now, thanks to a dedicated facility specialized in metal 3D printing located in the USA, Materialise can deliver implants faster, also improving communication with surgeons.

Materialise claims that the advent of 3D printing technology and the development of advanced visualization techniques have changed personalized patient care. 3D printing also provides more predictable and accurate simulations of the surgeries themselves, which is why surgeons are increasingly adopting this method as part of their medical practice to provide patients with personalized care and lower overall costs.
