Airbus Helicopters will use TRUMPF 3D metal printers to produce helicopter and aircraft parts

The German manufacturer of 3D metal printers – TRUMPF, has been supplying its systems to the new Airbus Helicopters 3D printing center in Donauwörth, Germany, for years. Now Airbus has announced that it intends to use TRUMPF 3D printing technology to produce components for its parent company Airbus’ helicopters and planes.

Airbus Helicopters will use metal 3D printing technology to produce components for CityAirbus’ experimental high-speed electric Racer helicopter, as well as Airbus A350 and A320 passenger aircraft, with structural elements made of titanium and high-strength aluminum. The company is investing heavily in additive manufacturing technology due to its ability to reduce weight and therefore reduce fuel consumption and costs. He is also exploring the possibility of consolidating parts of some components to reduce weight and values the possibility of reusing the powder.

“With its manufacturing know-how, TRUMPF is a reliable partner for the aerospace industry worldwide,” said Richard Bannmueller, CEO of TRUMPF Laser and System Technology. “Our 3D printing systems are a key technology on the path to sustainable flying and reduced dependence on long supply chains. Additive manufacturing saves expensive raw materials and can reduce production costs in the aerospace industry. 3D printers only use material that designers actually need for their components, and that ends up on the plane.”
