Yesterday, I went with Sebastian to Warsaw to take part in presentation of Polish-Swedish 3D printer – Skriware. The headquarters of company DaftCode – an investor of the whole performance, is in Warsaw Spire Building on the 40th floor. We had an opportunity to see Skriware, ask good deal of questions to its creators and see our capital from quite interesting perspective 🙂  I would like to share my opinion about it with the readers of 3D Printing Center.

My first impressions

At first sight SKriware looks great. It is an aesthetic device, available in different colours, equipped with an intuitive LCD screen (English version).  You can connect with it via USB i WiFi. You can start it remotely, what is on the one hand comfortable, but on the other hand a little bit dangerous (an example made up by Sebastian: “I start a 3D printer, which is placed in my room, when I am at work, it begins to print, but my cat decided to sit on the working bed.”). A practical solution is a magnetic pad, which you can put on the working bad. Thanks to it, you can remove your models with ease, without a need to use metal tools. Electronics and firmware were created by the company, but it bases on Repetier, similarly to the software, which bases on  a popular slicer Cura.  A huge disadvantage is a small working area of  15 x 15 x 13 cm. I know, that this 3D printer is destined to home use, but this dimensions limit our possibilities. A quality of prints is satisfactory.

Filaments

The 3D printer is not equipped with a heated bed, that is why you can use only PLA and PET-G. The maximal temperature of the nozzle amounts 230°C, so you can forget about ABS or another, more professional filaments. The producer is not going to apply any new solutions, which will let to use another materials. What is important, there aren’t any restrictions in choosing of filaments (the 3D printer accepts all of the filaments available on the market). The manufacturer plans to launch its own line of filaments and a function of recognising a colour of each filament. There is also a practical hiding gap for spools.

Skrimarket

Skriware is a device assembled for people, who can’t create their own 3D models. They can choose models from the market, available here. The idea is not so bad, but it needs to be improved… A number of models is very modest. Remember, that a lot of companies connected with 3D printing, generated their own platforms, where you can find a plenty of ready figurines, a part of them was also created by them and the effects are really spectacular.  In fact,  the market is one of the crucial aspects of this device, when the device is destined to the people, who won’t create their own models and are doomed to use ready models.

Contest

To improve the Skrimarket, the producer announces a contest to designers. Each month one best design will win Skriware 3D printer. To keep a temperature during competition, every week we will reward one designer with a roll of 3D printing filament. To read more detailed information, visit a website of the organiser.

skri konkurs

Skriware succeed in its Kickstarter’s campaign. It collected about 51.000 $. Its the most amazing point was a video. The device will find receivers, but the market needs to be developed… Currently the 3D printer is available to pre-order in a reduced (20%) price – 799$.
