Velo3D – an American manufacturer of 3D printers for metal, announced the launch of a new machine – Sapphire XC 1MZ, with one of the largest working areas on the market at the oval level with a diameter of 60 cm and a working chamber height of up to 100 cm. The 3D printer has been designed based on customer feedback from sectors such as aviation, energy and defense. The first batch of devices is to be delivered to aviation customers at the end of the third quarter of 2022.
The Velo3D Sapphire product line currently has four devices – each of the systems operates in the company’s patented SupportFree process, which is designed to enable the printing of overhangs and depressions from metal without the need for supports. Launched in 2018, the Sapphire model has been the company’s flagship device for over two years. Equipped with a work area of 31.5 x 40 cm, it has a dual 1 kW laser configuration. The improved Sapphire 1MZ increased the print volume to 315mm x 1000mm, while the newer Sapphire XC was 600mm x 550mm.
Combining a large diameter XC with a meter height of 1MZ, the latest version of Velo3D includes eight 1KW lasers to build on a production scale at high speeds. The machine has a faster, patented non-contact coater that guarantees no part collision, protecting both the printed structure and the coater, while reducing downtime between layers.
With standardized and controlled parameter sets, the XC 1MZ provides consistent geometric precision and surface finish. Additionally, the system is fully integrated with proprietary 3D Flow printing preparation software and Assure quality control software. The former optimizes builds with minimal supports, while the latter allows real-time process and quality monitoring using built-in sensors and optics. With nearly 1,000 sensors integrated into the machine, users are provided with layer-by-layer tracking, optical alignment, atmosphere verification and powder bed condition.
The Sapphire XC 1MZ is compatible with all Velo3D powder offerings – Aluminum F357, GRCop-42, Hastelloy C22, Hastelloy X, Scalmalloy, Inconel 625, Inconel 718 and Ti64 Grade 5.
