The German manufacturer of 3D printers for metal – TRUMPF has expanded its range of powder metal alloys with new grades of titanium, aluminum, stainless steel and tool steel. At the same time, the company implemented a green laser in the TruPrint 500 large format 3D printer for the first time, enabling users to 3D print with copper.
The first of the new materials is titanium 6242. The material will be used in the production of applications requiring operation at high temperatures of 300°C and more. At the same time, this titanium alloy is more difficult to process – to solve the problem of its processing in 3D printers, TRUMPF uses preheating up to 500°C. Another material is the Printdur HSA metal alloy dedicated to work on the TruPrint 2000 3D printer, which is made from recycled scrap. It is particularly robust without additional heat treatment and does not rust as quickly.
Another alloy – Medidur has the same properties as Printdur HSA, but the manufacturer has developed it specifically for the medical industry. This sector has higher requirements for the purity of materials, which is why Medidur consists only of pure elements. Both Printdur HSA and Medidur do not contain nickel or cobalt, due to the fact that both substances are considered potentially carcinogenic.
AMPO M789 tool steel is mainly used in tool and mold making. It is easy to process and at the same time very resistant to corrosion and can be used, for example, in the production of tools that are used in combination with more aggressive materials, e.g. in injection molding of plastics.
A separate novelty is the ability to 3D print large copper components – TRUMPF has equipped its largest 3D printer, the TruPrint 5000, with a green laser for the first time. With the new version of TruPrint 5000, hybrid production is also possible – users no longer have to incrementally produce a complete part, but print new parts on top of existing parts. TruPrint 5000 users can use Preform to 3D print special applications such as cooling channels on milled or cast parts. In the large assembly space of the system, service technicians can also repair engine turbine blades. The Preform Advanced variant has additional sensors and works automatically.
