The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has published the ISO 5425:2023 standard for PLA material in the context of 3D printing. A new standard called “Specifications for the use of poly(lactic acid) (PLA)-based filament in additive manufacturing applications” was announced in August this year.
The ISO 5425:2023 standard ensures consistent and quality-controlled use of the PLA filament, defining technical specifications and guidelines for its use in the 3D printing process. The process to publish this standard began in September 2019, when Shenzhen-based Esun Industrial Co., Ltd. (also known as eSUN) and the Beijing University of Technology and Business jointly presented a new proposal at the ISO conference. Following its adoption, a dedicated working group of global experts convened numerous meetings to plan and develop the standard.
The standard underwent a rigorous consultation and approval process that included several voting stages, including draft version (WD), committee version (CD) and draft international standard (DIS). The standard successfully resolved significant issues, leading to a smooth passage through the approval process, without any technical comments being raised at the DIS voting stage. As a result, the Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) stages were skipped and ISO published the standard.
ISO 5425:2023 is an important document describing the technical specifications of PLA filament, covering basic parameters such as appearance, net weight and tolerance, diameter, ovality tolerance, volatile substance limits, line tensile load and line elongation at break. In addition to these specifications, the standard provides a framework for testing methods, detection rules, marking, labeling, packaging, transportation and storage of PLA filament.
