The Italian implant manufacturer combines 3D printing and artificial intelligence

REJOINT, the Italian manufacturer of medical implants is expanding its activity and focusing on mass personalization of its products. They will use the fusion of 3D printing technology and artificial intelligence to optimize medical products.

3D printing technology is a manufacturing method that allows mass personalization and customization of products to the needs of users. In the case of medical implants, personalization in relation to the needs of users is becoming an increasingly popular practice due to the number of advantages that it brings. A medical implant adapted to the patient’s anatomy is primarily a greater comfort of use. 3D printing technology also allows you to design the internal structure of prints so that their weight can be lower, while maintaining the desired mechanical properties.

REJONIT is an Italian company founded in 2015 by specialists with many years of experience in the field of orthopedics. The company is building its position in the prosthetics industry, with particular emphasis on knee arthroplasty. In their work they use the Arcam EBM Q10plus printing system, working in EBM technology, the Swedish manufacturer Arcam (part of the GE Additive group). At the same time, they are also implementing artificial intelligence solutions that are to assist in the implementation of subsequent projects.

3D printing technology gives creators great design freedom. Based on data from medical imaging studies, designers are able to develop a model tailored to the patient’s anatomy. In their work they use solutions in the field of artificial intelligence, which on the basis of the collected data proposes the optimal dimensions of the implant for the examined anatomy. The goal of REJOINT is to examine patients also after surgery using special sensor bands to optimize the quality of their products as much as possible (determining e.g. the load on the prosthesis by the patient).

As representatives of the company say, the correct and precise process of dimensioning and positioning is a key factor for the type of dentures. The knee joints must withstand points that can reach a value of up to 300 kilograms. In addition, minimal dimensional discrepancies can cause discomfort in use, therefore maintaining adequate dimensional accuracy is necessary.

REJOINT is in the process of obtaining FDA certification, thanks to which it will be able to enter the American market. According to forecasts, such permits will be obtained by the company in the first half of 2021.
