Seurat Technologies will print 59 tonnes of Siemens Energy turbine parts in metal

Seurat Technologies, an American startup dealing with metal 3D printing, announced that Siemens Energy has become its first official customer. The company, using its proprietary Area Printing technology, will produce sealing segments for Siemens Energy turbines. The collaboration is spread over six years, during which time Seurat is expected to print parts with a total weight of 59 tons – starting at 2 tons and gradually increasing production to 15 tons per year.

Area Printing technology consists in combining metal powder with a laser, which, using pulsed infrared lasers and blue light, melts it, creating parts layer by layer. Seurat has created 3D printers that are capable of printing at 3.0 kg/h in an area of 450 x 450 x 450 mm, with plans to increase this to 1700 kg/h in an area of 9.6 x 9.6 x 9, 6mm by 2030. Along with the scaling of its technology, Seurat aims to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 100 metric tons by 2030, confirming its carbon footprint projection in accordance with ISO 14064 standards.

These production capabilities have attracted the attention of Siemens Energy as well as other global manufacturers who have signed letters of intent to use Area Printing technology to produce finished products. Siemens Energy, through its investment arm, has also decided to invest funds in Seurat Technologies.

Last year, Seurat announced that its pilot production center was operating at full capacity, and a full-scale factory was launched to serve growing customer demand. The company has raised more than $90 million in funding to date and has 209 granted and pending patents.
