Sciaky – a subsidiary of Phillips Service Industries (PSI) is a leading manufacturer of industrial metal additive manufacturing systems, whose EBAM (Electron Beam Additive Manufacturing) technology is the only metal 3D printing method approved for the production of land, marine, aerospace and space applications. The company announced a record-breaking performance on its machines, reaching 40 pounds (18.14 kilograms) of processed titanium powder per hour.
The Saint Exupéry Institute for Technological Research (IRT), based in France, achieved this high powder deposition rate with the Metalic Advanced Materials for Aeronautics (MAMA) project. The project started in 2019 with the goal of combining die forging with metal 3D printing to develop a new production process for titanium aviation parts. The project partners in this area are Airbus and Aubert & Duval. To date, thanks to the EBAM technology developed by Sciaky, over 330lb (150kg) of Ti-6AI-4V titanium has been deposited for three different design applications. Further projects are planned for 2022 and beyond, with great support for taking the process into production.
Sciaky’s EBAM systems are the most scalable metal 3D printing solutions in the industry, capable of producing parts up to 5.79 meters in length. EBAM provides quality and control together with the IRISS (Interlayer Real-time Imaging and Sensing System) system, which is the only real-time adaptive control system in the metal 3D printing market, and which can detect and digitally self-regulate metal deposition with high precision and repeatability. This innovative closed-loop control is the main reason why the EBAM Sciaky printing process ensures consistent part geometry, high mechanical properties, microstructure and metal chemistry, from the first part to the last.
