PRUSA Research has launched a new filament – Prusament PETG Tungsten 75. The material is dedicated to the creation of radiation protection applications, being a mixture of PETG and tungsten. Tungsten is a metal with high density and excellent radiation protection properties, which has a significant advantage over traditional materials used in this type of solutions, such as lead.
One of the key benefits of using PETG Tungsten 75 is its compatibility with a wide range of FFF/FDM 3D printers, making it an affordable choice even for hobbyists. Moreover, Prusa thoroughly tested the material for 3D printing capabilities, claiming that users could easily print functional and reliable radiation shields.
The potential applications for Prusament PETG Tungsten 75 are vast, ranging from radiation protection in medical facilities such as X-ray and CT scan rooms, to aerospace shielding and even personal protective equipment. The filament allows for the rapid production of custom radiation shields that can be tailored to specific needs and geometries.
In addition to the performance benefits, Prusament PETG Tungsten 75 is a more environmentally friendly option compared to traditional lead-based sheaths. Tungsten is non-toxic and can be safely disposed of without the risk of lead contamination.
Tungsten filament is only dyed dark gray metallic. The standard spool contains 1 kg of material, which corresponds to 100 m of filament. The company also offers 100g samples containing approx. 10m of material. Due to the large amount of tungsten in the mix, the total volume of the material is much less. The price for 1 kg of material is EUR 249 (incl. VAT), while a 100g sample costs EUR 25.99 (incl. VAT).
To support the implementation of this innovative material, PRUSA Research provides users with a comprehensive guide covering topics such as optimal 3D printing process settings and post-processing methods. You can read more about their new material at this link.
