PRUSA Research – a Czech manufacturer of 3D printers, has introduced four new filaments based on recycled polylactide (PLA), additionally using organic waste as coloring pigments. The materials were filled with by-products from production in the food and pharmaceutical industries, giving them specific and unique colors.
According to the manufacturer, the properties of natural pigments used in the new rPLA give them slightly different properties compared to conventional materials based on pure polylactide. First of all, they are more fragile and are more suitable for decorative purposes. The first material – Prusament rPLA Algae Pigment is filled with a by-product from a Czech company that uses red algae to produce pharmaceutical products. Thanks to their appropriate processing, PRUSA obtains a brown color.
Prusament rPLA Wine Pigment has a unique burgundy color, which is obtained from grapes. The manufacturer uses dry pigment made from by-products from the winemaking process. Prusament rPLA Corn Pigment is a beige-yellow filament that obtains its color from processed corn. The last material is Prusament rPLA Rissoto Pigment containing a creamy-white dye made from various food remains.
The new eco-friendly filaments are offered on 1-kilogram spools and cost €34.99.
