Users of Magics, Materialise’s data preparation and compilation software for industrial 3D printing, will soon have access to simulation tools for metal additive manufacturing thanks to a partnership between Materialise and Ansys. The joint software solution, which debuted at Formnext 2023 and is expected to be released in the second quarter of 2024, will include Ansys Additive Suite, which will be integrated with Magics.
The solution will enable users to combine two separate processes into one – companies say the software integration will enable new products to be brought to market faster by eliminating the need to transfer data between separate applications.
Materialise Magics offers CAD tools for creating designs dedicated to 3D printing. The software provides functions such as advanced configurations for nesting models in the working chamber of 3D printers, automatic file repair and automatic generation of support structures. The addition of Ansys Additive Suite will equip the software with additional tools such as 3D printing process simulation, model damage risk prediction, and structural and thermal analysis.
“Simulation is changing the way we view our interactions with the world,” said Shane Emswiler, senior vice president of products at Ansys. “Whether it is understanding the behavior of a new material or returning to standard product configurations, adopting Ansys technology into the metal 3D printing workflow means simulation is necessary and useful at all levels of the product lifecycle.”
Ansys simulation tools will be available to all Materialise Magics users, and the companies plan to explore “further opportunities” to develop simulations in the 3D printing process in the future.
