KIMYA publishes the results of a life cycle analysis of its recycled PETG filaments

The manufacturer of 3D printing materials – KIMYA, has published a life cycle analysis (LCA) of its PETG filaments. According to the company, using recycled PETG filaments helps reduce CO2 emissions by 35% compared to standard PETG. KIMYA encourages 3D printer users to increase their use of recycled filaments in the interests of sustainability and the conservation of natural resources.

Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) is a multi-stage, multi-criteria analysis that measures the environmental impact of a product or service throughout its life cycle, including its production and use. Conducted in partnership with Greenly and based on ADEME guidelines, an analysis of KIMYA’s recycled PETG 3D filament showed an emission of 4.08 kg CO2 compared to 6.27 kg CO2 for Kimya’s standard PETG filament.

According to Sculpteo’s 2022 “The State of 3D Printing Report”, additive manufacturing improves the environmental impact of user activities. During interviews with managers, engineers and designers operating in the manufacturing and industrial environment, 41% of them said that 3D printing helps companies achieve their sustainability goals, and 61% believe that the technology allows them to produce it in quantities appropriate to their needs .

“Our approach is part of our ongoing commitment to more sustainable production, as evidenced by our line of recycled filaments called ‘Remake’,” said Benoît Stoeux, Managing Director of KIMYA. “At the same time, we are also thinking about our packaging, which is now 100% eco-friendly, using recycled cardboard and soluble ink. The mounting flanges for our filament spools are made of 95% recycled polycarbonate. The next step for KIMYA is to conduct a full carbon assessment of our operations to accurately estimate our carbon footprint and take concrete actions to reduce CO2 emissions.”
