Desktop Metal Announces Qualification of Three Metal Alloys for 3D Printing – Chromium-Zirconium Copper, Titanium and Stainless Steel

Desktop Metal has announced the qualification of three new metal powders for its Binder Jetting – Production System industrial 3D printer. New metals include Copper Alloy C18150, Ti64 Titanium Alloy and 304L Stainless Steel.

C18150 – Also known as chromium zirconium copper, is a high strength and conductive copper alloy commonly used in thermal transfer applications such as electrical connectors, welding electrodes and other electrical and electronic components. The company says one of its customers, a “global automaker,” is testing the material on a part project that is being developed for future full-production use. Chromium zirconium copper alloy C18150, trade name Osprey, is supplied by Sandvik.

For the Ti64 titanium alloy qualification, Desktop Metal worked with TriTech Titanium Parts of Detroit, USA. This company produces titanium parts for commercial and industrial markets, including the aerospace, marine and automotive industries. Ti64 is a popular material due to its strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. Desktop Metal says working with Ti64 in the Binder Jetting process simplifies the production of complex parts that can be difficult and expensive to produce using traditional methods.

In turn, the 304L qualification completes the set of stainless steel powders that are now qualified for the Shop System 3D printer, which also includes 17-4PH, 316L, IN625 and Cobalt-Chrome steels. The company claims that among stainless steels, 304L stands out for its high tensile strength, corrosion resistance and durability.
