ASTM International – a global standards organization, has published a new specification for maraging steel used in 3D printing technology from powdered metals (PBF). Maraging steel belongs to the category of precipitation hardening steels that become stronger over time, making it very often used in industries such as automotive, aerospace and the production of sporting goods. The new standard, identified as WK82609, will be published as ASTM F3607.
Maraging steel is a metal alloy consisting of iron with nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, titanium and aluminum. Its features include high strength, ductility and corrosion resistance. Particularly with its high tensile strength and toughness, maraging steel is suitable for making parts that require durability and resilience to withstand frequent impacts. In turn, corrosion resistance ensures longevity and reliability, especially in difficult conditions. In addition, maraging steel exhibits excellent machinability, enabling it to be precisely shaped and machined to meet the high tolerances required for 3D printed parts.
Maraging steel is used in aerospace components, high-performance tools and dies, ammunition components, and more. In aviation, it is used to 3D print strong and durable parts such as landing gear and wing fittings. For high-performance tools and dies, maraging steel can withstand heavy loads and stresses. It is also used in ammunition components such as armor plates and bullets, providing strength and corrosion resistance.
