Apple joins the Development Fund of the Blender Foundation

Blender is one of the most popular (and free) open source 3D modeling software successfully used by designers specializing in 3D printing. The program was created in 1994 and since then it has undergone a huge number of updates, becoming a powerful tool used by thousands of users around the world to create all kinds of 3D assets.

What distinguishes Blender from typical CAD class design programs is its focus on 3D modeling (sculpting). It is not the happiest choice when you need to design a strictly technical, parametric model for a strictly industrial purpose, however, it is a perfect tool for designing all kinds of figurines, show objects, or even architectural objects (but also in a more artistic edition).

Over the years, Blender has received significant financial support from its community, however, as always with this type of community initiative, the sum of the donations is “sufficient” to further develop the project, but it is difficult to speak of any pomp.

The Blender Development Foundation offers a number of levels of support:

  • corporate, brown = EUR 6 thousand / year
  • corporate silver = EUR 12 thousand / year
  • corporate gold = 30 thousand EUR / year.

Apple recently joined the group of companies supporting the development of Blender – one of the largest technology corporations in the world. As befits its status (and resources…), Apple decided to provide support on a slightly different level and joined the Blender Development Foundation as a “Patron Member”. This means that it will contribute EUR 120,000 a year or more, but it is quite likely that Apple’s contribution will be much higher than the minimum needed to reach this level …

Thanks to the additional financial opportunities, Blender will now be able to chew through its very long list of improvements and new requests for new features, as well as fix bugs faster.
